NEW UK ART FAIRS FOR 2010

Pubished July 2nd, 2009

After the resounding success of the small, high quality Luxury Antiques Weekends first launched in Northumberland in 2008, The Antiques Dealers Fair Limited is introducing three new fine art and antiques fairs to its schedule for 2010 (see over for schedule). These new prestigious boutique events will take place in Gloucestershire, Hampshire and Leicestershire.

The first new venture takes place at Tortworth Court, near Wotton-under-Edge in Gloucestershire (26 – 28 February 2010) replacing The LAPADA Autumn Antiques and Fine Art Fair, which took place in the autumn at The Centaur at Cheltenham Racecourse for five years.

The next new event is The Botleigh Grange Antiques and Fine Art Fair at Hedge End near Southampton. This fair has been introduced to serve an eager audience in the south and is staged on 23 – 25 April. It is slightly larger than the Luxury Antiques Weekends with room for some 30 exhibitors.

A further fair joins the 2010 schedule in the autumn. The Luxury Antiques Weekend at Stapleford Park in Stapleford near Melton Mowbray, Leicestershire (17th – 19th September 2010). Stapleford Park Country House Hotel is a member of Small Luxury Hotels of the World and is situated in the most stunning quintessentially English countryside.

“My small, high quality fairs featuring an interesting mix of specialist dealers have proved very popular with the public, and they attract discerning clients who find the concept of 20-25 reputable exhibitors under one roof at conveniently situated four-star hotels most appealing,” explains Ingrid Nilson of The Antiques Dealers Fair Limited. “A number of BADA and LAPADA members have been tremendous supporters of my fairs, which are vetted with a dateline of 1970 for most disciplines. Strong marketing plays a major role in ensuring all our fairs are not just regional events, but bring in a suitably wide audience, even from abroad.”

Working Worlds/GAX Technologies: The International Career Fair

The fair will be held from 6 am slt to 11 am slt. Jorden Andrew will be the DJ for the after party and will be playing lovely jazz tunes for the crowd live from 10am slt-11am slt. The European real life job fair is held in Second Life every six months at the Working Worlds Luxembourg sim. The popularity of the job fairs have grown immensely over the past two years. This type of recruitment for real life companies is the way of the future for big corporations. Second Life has become the virtual platform preferred by GAX Technologies to help their clients reach out and connect with their future employees. Job seekers attend the fair in search of finding their dream job or their next big career move. To help job hunters learn more about the fair and how it will benefit them there will be conferences and e-learning sessions at the Working Worlds location in-world. Working Worlds offers everything possible to help ensure the success of the job seekers.

During the November 2008 fair 3,500 candidates submitted their CV’s, the May 2008 fair brought 2,767 CV’s, and for the November 2007 fair there were 1,500 CV’s submitted by candidates. Every six months the numbers of CV’s submitted continues to increase which proves that people are responsive to an in-world job fair. Presently, there are over 3,500 CV’s submitted for the May 2009 fair which will make this job fair the most successful one yet. In order to participate as a career seeker go to the Working Worlds’ website www.working-worlds.com and register your CV, it’s a very easy process and will put you on the right track to finding your new livelihood.

Cornelia den Hartog, Managing Director of ‘GAX Technologies’ and organizer of the Career Fairs is entirely convinced; ‘The need for companies to attract new profiles from beyond the territorial limits is becoming more and more important. ‘The ‘Working Worlds’ Career Fairs are in itself the most efficient solutions currently available to these companies without having to deploy significant resources. Our partners will be directly in touch with candidates who will not have to travel, but who may meet their future employer “Live” on Second Life’.

As we have stated before, it really does not get any easier than this and the results can be just as rewarding for both the employer and the job seeking employee. The Working Worlds sim gives a career seeker the opportunity to do something they cannot do outside of a virtual world. One can get up out of bed, walk over to the computer, and be interviewed without having to change clothing or pay travel expenses to interview with recruiters from prestigious companies for a job that he/she is qualified for. Using Second Life as a complimentary recruitment tool is just the beginning of the many uses of Second Life for real life corporations. Come down and discover a creative, fulfilling, and exciting world of opportunities. There is opportunity for everyone, you are invited to come and find that career you have always wanted it is just a teleport away!

20/21 British Art Fair

Pubished May 21st, 2009

The 20/21 British Art Fair is the only fair specialising exclusively in modern and contemporary British art. It will take place again this year at the Royal College of Art, Kensington Gore, London SW7, from 16th to 20th September, 2009. The Royal College of Art can justly be called the spiritual home of British art and, as such, provides an ideal setting for the fair which attracts some 60 of our leading dealers showing works by the great names of the 20th century: Bacon, Farthing,Freud, Frink, Frost, Hepworth, Hockney, Hodgson, Lanyon, Lowry, Moore, Nash, Piper, Riley, Scott, Spencer and Sutherland to name a few.

Alongside these will be a large selection of work by emerging and established contemporary artists, some of whom already have achieved international reputations – like Hirst, Emin, Grayson Perry et al – as well as work by emerging artists who may be the stars of tomorrow.

Market Still Strong
The market for good quality, well priced modern British art is holding up well, according to reports from the most recent fairs and exhibitions. The market today is also much deeper than it was at the time of the previous recession of the early 1990s and this will help sustain prices. ‘What’s the point of leaving the money in the bank earning little or no interest when I can buy a work of art which I can enjoy now?’ is often quoted by buyers.

The 20/21 British Art Fair, is now in its 22nd year. More than 90% from 2008 are returning this year, demonstrating the strength of this fair which, not only offers an enormous variety of art under one roof, but also an opportunity to tap into the expertise of the 60 leading dealers. Whether your taste is for the earlier work, Scottish Colourists, Pop Art, or the contemporary, the breadth and depth of more than a hundred years of British art may well surprise. With prices from the low hundreds to hundreds of thousands, it is not to be missed!

London Design Festival 2009

Pubished May 10th, 2009

The London Design Festival has announced its plans for the seventh Festival, running 19–27 September, with an array of innovative and creative events, installations and exhibitions taking place all over London. Speaking at the Press Conference held at the V&A Museum, Ben Evans, Festival Director outlined some of the major highlights of the Festival. This year’s Festival also promises a unique blend of up to 200 events and activities taking place in the capital. The varied programme will include international exhibitions, trade events, local showcases, installations, talks and seminars, product launches, receptions, private views and parties – all reflecting London’s place at the heart of the international design community and its position as a world creative capital.

The Tournament – At the centre of the Festival will be a gigantic chess board in Trafalgar Square. Spanish designer Jaime Hayón has designed thirty-two ceramic chess pieces, each up to 2m tall that will be located in the centre of Trafalgar Square. The installation – supported by Arts Council England and the Spanish Institute for Foreign Trade – will be interactive, inviting the public to stage giant-scale chess matches; a design reinterpretation of the Battle of Trafalgar.

The V&A – This year, for the first time, the London Design Festival will take up residence within the V&A, one of the world’s greatest museums of art and design, signalling the start of a closer on-going relationship. The museum has set aside the newly opened Sackler Centre and other areas of the museum for Festival events, shows, talks and installations. Highlights include:

The Wallpaper* Chair Arch – a dramatic outdoor installation reviving a great Victorian tradition. In honour of Britain’s creative industries Wallpaper* is commissioning a contemporary arch from one of the city’s most prominent and exciting young designers.

A specially commissioned installation in the Tunnel Entrance to the V&A commissioned by Arts Co created from reclaimed waste.

‘In Praise of Shadows’ – an exhibition organised by EUNIC (the network of European Cultural Centres) with the support of the European Commission to mark the advent of the EU directive to phase out low-efficiency light bulbs by 2012. The project – curated by Jane Withers – is opportunity to challenge the way we think about light, allowing visitors to enjoy a choreography of light in darkened galleries.
A unique poster exhibition curated by Domenic Lippa, Partner at Pentagram Design, featuring the work of 25 leading graphic designers.

Design tours within the V&A, led by a small number of key London designers pointing out collections or objects with special significance.

A major party to celebrate The London Design Festival 2009 within the V&A, 24 September.

Size + Matter at Southbank Centre – Now in its third year the Size + Matter project goes from strength to strength in 2009 – with Shiguru Ban and another leading designer commissioned to use materials to create a temporary piece of public design. The installations will be on show outside Southbank Centre, Phillips De Pury & Company will auction the pieces in the autumn. Past Size + Matter commissions include works by high profile designers Amanda Levete, Zaha Hadid and David Adjaye.

Mayor Boris Johnson said: ‘There has never been a better time to support London’s thriving creative industries and highlight the dynamic design that continues to boost our economy and attract investment to the capital. The London Design Festival helps promote our world-class innovative design and I encourage everyone to attend and experience London’s creative brilliance.’

Ben Evans, Director of the London Design Festival said ‘in times of adversity design should be bold and ideas driven. Now is an opportunity for a creative approach. We hope this year’s Festival will be a platform for the best that design can offer’.

Electronic & New Media Art Fair Opens in London

Pubished March 2nd, 2009

Robotic, sound and solar sculptures, mechanical writing machines, laser and subliminal installations are just some of the incredible exhibits at Kinetica Art Fair, the world’s first art fair dedicated to kinetic, robotic, sound, light and time-based art.

Over 30 galleries and organisations specialising in kinetic, electronic & new media art are taking part with more than 150 artists exhibiting, providing unparalleled opportunities to view and buy work in this thriving international field and participate in the programme of talks, workshops and performances.

Kinetic art is art that has a life of it’s own. Pioneered by world famous artists such as Maholy Nagy, Jean Tinguely, Marcel Duchamp and Alexander Calder during the early 1900s, modern contemporary kinetic and electronic artworks utilise and warp technology itself, to explore, nurture and comment on our evolutionary processes and challenge scientific and universal exploration.

Kinetic artists exhibiting at the Fair include:

Tim Lewis creates automated sculptures that blur the boundaries between man and machine. He gives inanimate objects attributes they do not normally possess allowing them to interact with people and the environment around them.

Daniel Chadwick creates mobiles made up of kinetic solar systems, which rotate and revolve as they orbit each other. Sometimes using tiny solar-powered motors to propel the kinetic elements, he also employs light and lasers to illuminate the struggle between two and three dimensionality.

Martin Richman works with light, colour and space in both the private and public realms to explore our experience of the space that we occupy. He has worked on major public projects and collaborative works with architects and engineers through to discrete sculptures that occupy a variety of spaces from whole rooms to the space between two books.

Giles Walker, is a scrap artist, creating work from readily available rubbish and scrap. For Peepshow, his pole dancing robots are powered by 12V motors found in cars (windscreen wiper motors etc) and then controlled through a PC.

Sam Buxton’s work continually blurs the lines between art, science and design, he specialises in developing objects that can communicate the delicate relationship between the human body and its environment.

Material Beliefs have created a Carnivorous Lampshade Robot inspired by the pitcher plant, a carnivorous plant that attracts and consumes insects to survive. The insects fall into the plant and are unable to escape. In the same way, this spherical lampshade has multiple holes in its surface which are long funnels going deep into the lamp. Insects are attracted to the light shining out of the holes, enter the lamp and are trapped. Eventually they die and fall into the microbial fuel cell underneath. This generates electricity which is stored and used to power a series of low power ultraviolet LEDs. A light sensor detects when the house lights are turned off and switches on the LEDs, attracting insects throughout the night.

Material Beliefs is a collaboration between designers and scientists/engineers and comprises of Aleksandar Zivanovic, James Auger and Jimmy Loizeau. The project explores an alternative approach to bringing robots into the domestic environment, exploring both the aesthetics and functionality that may elicit a symbiotic coexistence with humans in their homes.

Exhibiting artists included:
Jason Bruges, Balint Bolygo, Tom Wilkinson, Chris Levine, Elias Crespin, Tim Lewis, Sam Buxton, Daniel Chadwick, Ray Lee, Roger Vilder, Adrian Baynes, Kineticus (Bernward Frank), Michael Markert, Martin Richman, Peter Sedgley, Stewart Warren-Hill, Hans Kotter, Giles Walker, Chris O’Shea, Dominic Harris and Ivan Black. Further artists will be announced shortly.

Exhibitors included:
Node London, Laikingland, Shadow Robots, Patrick Heide Gallery, Computer Art Society, Holotronica, Themersons Press, Mute Magazine, Giles Walker, Tim Lewis, Contemporary Art Society, Kinetica Museum, FACT/ Bosch & Simmons, Gallery [DAM] Berlin, Material Beliefs (James Agar/Alex Zivanovic), Jason Bruges Studio, Kinetic Art Organisation and Chris O Shea/ Cinimod Studio.
