LONDON ZOO ART FAIR
Published September 30th, 2007
Zoo Art Fair made its debut in 2004 at the London Zoo, in Regent’s Park. The site allowed for a series of memorable installations, including a digital installation in the penguin pool by Simon Faithfull. This year, the expanded fair moves to larger premises at the Royal Academy of Arts in the West End, and organizers expect more than 12,000 visitors.
In addition to commercial galleries, like Mary Mary from Glasgow and ausstellungsraum25 from Zurich, Zoo Art Fair makes space for artist collectives, nonprofit organizations, project spaces and publications. Participating organizations must be no more than six years old.
A standout among this year’s exhibitors is Associates, a temporary project space directed by Ryan Gander and Rebecca May Marston. Associates will be exhibiting work by 14 artists, including a sculptural work made of folded pajamas by Matthew Smith. T1+2 Gallery’s exhibits include a levitating John the Baptist head by Martin Sexton, and a work by Petroc Sesti, which the gallery director Wolfe Lenkiewicz describes as a “liquid hurricane suspended in a large glass sphere.†There will also be solo shows by David Lock and Jason Fox, who both won prestigious prizes at last year’s fair. Zoo Art Fair will be held Oct. 12 to 15 at the Royal Academy of Arts (6 Burlington Gardens; 44-20-7247-8597; www.zooartfair.com).
